Getting repairs done in Tasmania: renters' rights
Your owner must keep the home in good repair.
Your rights in plain English
- Tell them in writing within 7 days of the problem arising.
- They must fix it within 28 days (14 days for a stove that still has at least half its elements working).
- If it's not done, apply to the Residential Tenancy Commissioner for a repair order.
- Keep paying your rent. Withholding it can lead to a notice to vacate.
Put it in writing, with your rights spelled out
Our free email tool writes the message to your agent for Tasmania, quoting your rights. Keep dated photos and a record you can use at the end of your lease.
The email tool is free. The $29 Tenancy Pass adds your condition report and dated record for the whole lease, incl. GST, with a 14-day money-back guarantee.
What your email should say
- Under the Residential Tenancy Act 1997 (Tas), you must keep the premises in good repair and carry out this repair within 28 days of this notice.
- If it is not done, I may apply to the Residential Tenancy Commissioner for an order for repairs.
